Red Sox and Kiké Hernandez agree to a new deal

This winter, the 31-year-old was supposed to become a free agent.

Boston's focus has switched to 2023 with the Red Sox last in the AL East.

Monday, the team re-signed a vital player for next season.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reports the Red Sox have extended Kiké Hernandez's contract for one year and $10 million.

Hernandez signed a $14 million, two-year deal with Boston before 2020. He was a winter free agent.

Hip pain has limited Hernandez to 68 games this season.

Hernandez, a former "super-utility" player, is now a strong defensive center fielder.

In 69 playoff games with the Red Sox and Dodgers, he has a.900 OPS.
